- Since 1 January 2018, three (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain) of the six Gulf States have introduced a completely new VAT system. It is expected that the remaining Gulf states will soon follow, as well as that other (forms of) taxes will be expanded or introduced. In this article the authors discuss the most striking similarities and differences between this Middle Eastern VAT and its European equivalent
