Summary
Many young graduates, who are unemployed with high student debt, look for English language teaching jobs outside of the US, especially in Asia, where there is an almost insatiable demand for English teachers. This article discusses demand for qualified faculty in China, taxation in China, U.S. tax advantages of working in China, tax home, U.S. state residency, foreign earned income, bona fide reisdence test, physical presence test, U.S. certification for reduced tax rates in tax treaty countries, other reporting issues, and transfer or foreign earned income back to the United States. The article concludes that many recent American graduates are unemployed due to the recession, and teaching in China can be a good opportunity. There are many advantages to working in China, which is the second largest economy in the world, such as working with people from a different culture and travel opportunities while in China. There is also a substantial economic benefit while working in China and, after taking account of the tax exempt salary level, compensation packages can be comparable to those at home. Filing the required IRS forms to apply for U.S. resident Certification is a necessary pre-requisite in order to process tax-exempt status in China
