Revolution, democracy and taxation
The author of this article searches for the answers to five questions: (1) What has been the role of taxation in the history of revolutions? (2) What has been the role of taxation in the current crisis, in the double sense of levying taxes and spending tax money? (3) What can be done within the framework of the national tax systems to mitigate the divisive social tensions and restore competitiveness of the national economy? (4) What can be done at the international level to prevent the tax scandals we have witnessed in recent times and to reconnect tax revenue with effective economic activity? and (5) What should be done at the level of the European Union to save the euro and the European Union from disintegration and restore some form of democratic control on taxing and spending in the euro zone and European Union at large?
