This article discusses two case studies, the Environmental Tax Reform (Ecotax) in Germany and the Climate Change Levy (CCL) in the United Kingdom. While the Ecotax is poorly received, particulary by industry and the media, the CCL has been largely ingnored. This article tries to provide the policy-maker with several lessons for the future as regards the political acceptance of market-based instruments and other environmental fiscal reforms
