Summary
This article examines how and why institutions of taxation differ across and within countries, and how they evolve over time. It focuses on the tax systems of North and Latin America over the 19th and 20th centuries. The purpose of this article is to examine whether the extreme differences in inequality that were present across the economies of the Americas soon after colonization also affected the ways tax institutions evolved
