Summary
Multiple taxpayers make up the music industry. These include songwriters, producers, entertainers, executives, artists, and many others. In addition, there are three major Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) - also known as licensing companies - that pay performance royalties to songwriters. ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are the three main licensing companies responsible for royalty payments in various genres of music. All of these "players" create a complex income tax environment. This article discusses: significant organizations and individuals in the music industry; income tax issues faced by this milieu of taxpayers; and planning opportunities available to taxpayers involved in the music industry
