- Summary
- At the 2009 G-20 summit, Hong Kong narrowly escaped being branded a tax haven following the global financial crisis and the subsequent "war on secrecy". In September 2014 the Global Forum decreed that the world should adopt automatic exchange of information (AEOI). Hong Kong finally decided to join the crowd and is committed to do what is needed to keep up with the latest international standard and to implement AEOI in Hong Kong by 2018. In April the government released a consultation paper to seek public opinion on the proposed model for AEOI in Hong Kong and followed that in October with a consolidated response proposing further refinements to the initial AEOI framework based on public opinion. The response reiterates the objective to introduce an amendment bill into the Legislative Council in early 2016 with expected passage by 2017. Hong Kong could be ready to commence AEOI by the end of 2018
