In a joint policy statement in December 1971, six Canadian provinces announced their intention to enact a radically new system of death taxes. They have since enacted their Uniform Succession Duty laws. In addition, important amendments to the British Columbia Succession Duty Act were introduced in the provincial legislature on 4 February 1972, and have been enacted. This article explains the effect of the new legislation
