Summary
This article discusses virtual currencies and its limits and identifies some principles for the tailoring of solutions. It focuses on the bitcoin phenomenon and its mechanics. Furthermore, it provides an overview of the regulatory approaches to virtual currencies in the EU and concentrates on unilateral approaches taken in different jurisdictions around the world, and describes various policies in order to use them as basis for the design of new rules. The last part concludes that the absence of concrete regulation of virtual currencies should be urgently remedied on an international scale
