Summary
On 5 July 2015 Greeks rejected any further austerity by voting overwhelmingly no, and they celebrated their "victory" in the streets of Athens. In doing so, they rejected the doomsday scenarios predicted by financial and economic experts and gave priority to political considerations of national sovereignty and patriotic emotions of national honour. It was the final act in a tragedy that moved in slow motion from a financial and economic crisis to a political crisis. This article looks at the dangers of an accidental Greek exit from the euro and the short- and long-term options to avert disaster
